How is PSIPS generally to be used?

At present, this system acts as a storage and retrieval site for Sequence Listings that are at least 300 pages (roughly 600Kb), mega table sections that are at least 200 contiguous pages, and other mega items. The data have been included in either a granted US patent or a published US patent application. Shorter Sequence Listings and tables are accessible via Patents-, and Applications-, on-the-Web home pages. Using PSIPS, you can view or download individual sequences or tables, or you can download the entire Sequence Listing, mega table section, or other mega item.

Note: when downloading all or part of a Sequence Listing as a file that is greater than 1 Gigabyte, there will be a problem opening the downloaded file if your PC has insufficient memory, i.e. less than or equal to 1 Gigabyte of memory (RAM).

How do I access a specific document in PSIPS?

If you know the document ID of the US patent or publication that has the mega information you are seeking, you may submit it on the PSIPS home page. If you do not know the document ID number or patent number, you may click on the "submit" button without entering any data and you will be shown a list of all documents stored by PSIPS, including published titles and publication dates, sorted by document ID or patent number.

How can I access multiple documents in PSIPS?

The PSIPS home page also allows for retrieval of a range of documents based on the date of publication or patent grant. Again, clicking on the appropriate "submit" button without entering any data will retrieve a list of all documents stored by PSIPS beginning with the most recently released documents, including published titles and publication dates.

How do I access sequences for a particular document?

In order to access the sequence information for a patent or published application, you may submit the document number via the PSIPS home page. The PSIPS document detail page will then show you the number of sequences (SEQ ID NOs.) within the selected Sequence Listing. You will have the opportunity to view one or more sequences, or download the entire Sequence Listing. Obviously, download time depends on the file size and the speed of the Internet connection.

How do I access tables for a particular document?

In order to access mega tables for a patent or published application, you may submit the document number via the PSIPS home page. The PSIPS document detail page will then show you the number of mega tables for the document you have chosen. You will have the opportunity to view one or more mega tables, or download the entire mega table section. Obviously, download time depends on the file size and the speed of the Internet connection. If you do not know the mega table ID number of the table you would like to view, you may choose to view a list of all the mega tables available or to go directly to the first mega table available.

Why was PSIPS created?

Mega information is stored and retrieved via PSIPS because it is too large to publish elsewhere. The data are placed on a separate system because inclusion in the image and text files of the systems underlying EAST, WEST, PatFT, and AppFT, would impair system performance. Mega Sequence Listings have been stored in PSIPS since February 2001 and mega tables since January 2007.

What other things can I do with sequences from PSIPS?

If you are interested in sequence searching, you may download sequences from PSIPS and enter them into a sequence-searching site such as that found at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), which is part of the National Library of Medicine.
